History of RAM

Memory (RAM) – a device that is a critical component in the computer and that it determines the speed of the last, and also the maximum amount of his tasks simultaneously.

The first memory was developed in 1970 by American scientist Robert Dennard, who worked at IBM. This kind of memory and gave the foundation that exists at the moment as a memory. It was a dynamic memory DRAM. But as with the introduction of the DRAM is not quite time to process the data so as one would like, then 10 years later appeared the form of dynamic memory – FPM. The peculiarity of this memory was the fact that there was a RAM area, to which the processor can handle in a straight line, no wait cycles, using special memory chips.

In 1994, there was an improved form FPM – it EDO. Its peculiarity was that when the first treatment were read several consecutive words. In 1997 replaced EDO SDRAM, the main advantage of which is the synchronization of the processor.

In 1999, the move was a new kind of memory – RDRAM. Among its advantages was the increase in the number of banks to increase parallelism, and the transfer of control information separately on the bus. After some time it became clear that RDRAM is not justified to expectations. Therefore, on machines up to 2008 have been widely used memory such as SDRAM and DDR. And at this point in most machines used DDR2 and DDR3.
